Alternanthera bettzickiana "Red" is a stem plant grown for narrow, pointed leaves in shades from coppery pink through to deep red, used to break up a wall of green. It sits in the same group as the better-known aquarium Alternanthera reineckii, and trade names within that group are applied loosely, so treat the label as a description of the look rather than a firm identification.

Aquarium care

  • Stem plant: separate the bunch and push stems into the substrate individually, a couple of centimetres apart.
  • Needs strong light to hold red colour. In a dim tank the new growth comes in green and leggy.
  • Plants in this group are often grown emersed at the nursery and do not always convert cleanly to permanent submersed growth. Expect some of the first leaves to be shed while it adjusts.
  • Propagate by cutting the top and replanting it, after which the base usually branches.
  • Benefits from an iron-inclusive fertiliser, and from CO2 injection, though CO2 is not essential.

Best as a midground accent in a bright, well-fertilised planted tank alongside small schooling fish and shrimp. It is not a fair choice for a low-light beginner setup.
