Trident java fern (Microsorum pteropus "Trident") is a narrow-leaved cultivar of the familiar java fern, each leaf split into slim finger-like lobes. It is smaller and slower than the standard form, which makes it much easier to place, and the finely divided leaves catch flow attractively over driftwood.
Aquarium care
- A rhizome plant, and the rhizome must never be buried. Covered by substrate it rots, and the plant is lost.
- Attach it instead to driftwood, rock or mesh using cotton thread, fishing line or a small dab of gel superglue, until the roots grip on their own.
- Midground placement on hardscape, or tucked into shaded corners under taller growth.
- Low to moderate light is plenty. Strong light over such a slow grower mostly feeds algae on the leaves.
- No CO2 needed. It draws nutrients from the water column, so root tabs are not what it wants.
- Propagates by forming plantlets along older leaves. Let them grow roots, then detach and attach them elsewhere.
A dependable choice for low-tech tanks and for anyone building a hardscape they may want to rearrange later. The tough leaves hold up in tanks with larger or busier fish.
