Small Assorted Cichlid

This is a mixed box of young Lake Malawi cichlids, generally mbuna and other small rock-dwelling species, sold as an assortment rather than by species. It is the usual way people start a Malawi tank: a group of juveniles grown on together tends to settle into a working social order better than adults introduced one at a time. What is actually in the tank changes with every shipment, so ask us what has come in before you plan around a particular fish.

Aquarium care

• Needs hard, alkaline water. Lethbridge tap water suits Malawi cichlids well.
• Stock the tank heavily with rock so every fish can find a line of sight break.
• Mbuna are territorial. Crowding within a properly sized tank spreads aggression rather than concentrating it.
• Mostly herbivorous. Use a vegetable-based cichlid pellet or flake, and avoid rich, meaty foods.
• Sand or fine gravel over the base, with open swimming room above the rockwork.

For a Malawi tank with other mbuna, peacocks and Synodontis catfish. Not compatible with soft-water community fish.
