The electric yellow cichlid (Labidochromis caeruleus) is the yellow morph from Lion's Cove in Lake Malawi, and the fish that persuades most people to try mbuna. The body is an even, solid buttercup yellow, finished with a jet black leading edge on the dorsal fin and black tips to the pelvic and anal fins. That black-on-yellow contrast is what makes it read so cleanly against dark rock.
Aquarium care
- Reaches around 10 cm.
- The mildest of the commonly kept mbuna, though still a cichlid.
- Keep one male with several females; a group settles better than a pair.
- Needs hard, alkaline water.
- Wants rockwork with caves over sand.
- Omnivorous but leans vegetarian. A vegetable-based cichlid pellet suits it.
The usual starting point for a Malawi tank, and a good match for other mbuna, peacocks and Synodontis catfish. It is not a community fish for soft water, and it will harass small tetras and similar.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current mbuna.
