The zebra angelfish is a patterned line of Pterophyllum scalare, the South American angelfish, carrying four or more dark vertical bars against a silver body rather than the three of the wild fish. The extra banding gives it a more strongly ruled look, and the body carries the usual green-gold sheen over the shoulders. Like all angelfish it is a tall, laterally flattened cichlid with long trailing dorsal, anal and ventral fins.
Aquarium care
- Needs a tall tank. Height matters more than length for this fish.
- A cichlid, not a community fish in the usual sense. Adults pair off and become territorial.
- Young fish can be grown on in a group; expect pairs to form and claim space.
- Prefers warm, soft to moderately hard water with driftwood and tall planting.
- Omnivorous: flake, pellets, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp.
- Long fins make it a target for nippers.
Keep it with corydoras, larger tetras, rasboras and peaceful catfish. Neon tetras, ember tetras and dwarf shrimp will be eaten by an adult, and tiger barbs or serpae tetras will shred its fins.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current angel list.
