Military helmet nerites are among the larger nerite snails sold for freshwater tanks, with a heavy, dark, strongly ridged shell that gives them their name. The ridges make them look almost armoured, and they have the muscle to work over rough hardscape that smaller snails skip. As algae grazers they are thorough and slow, in the best sense.
Aquarium care
- Larger than most nerites, commonly 2 to 3 cm.
- Grazes film and soft algae from glass, wood and rock; it does not eat healthy plants.
- Cannot reproduce in fresh water, as the larvae require brackish conditions.
- May still deposit small white eggs on hardscape, which are harmless but hard to scrape off.
- Needs reasonable hardness and calcium to keep the shell healthy.
- Climbs well and will leave an uncovered tank.
They suit established planted or hardscaped community tanks with peaceful fish. Give them a mature tank with real algae growth, since a spotless new setup will not feed them. Keep them away from loaches, pufferfish and larger cichlids.
