The Wapoga rainbowfish (Chilatherina alleni) comes from the Wapoga river system in West Papua. Mature males carry an iridescent blue-green front body shading into yellow-orange through the rear and fins, and the colour genuinely shifts through the day and with mood — a fish that looks muted in the morning can be at full intensity by the afternoon. Females and juveniles are far plainer, which is normal for the genus.

Aquarium care

  • Reaches roughly 10 cm.
  • Shoaling — keep six or more, with several males so display behaviour has an outlet.
  • Colour develops slowly over months; a plain juvenile is not a poor fish.
  • Prefers hard, alkaline water.
  • An active swimmer that needs tank length and moderate flow.
  • Omnivorous, and takes quality flake, pellets and frozen foods.

They suit a spacious community with other rainbowfish, barbs, larger tetras and peaceful catfish. Rainbowfish are fast, enthusiastic feeders, so avoid keeping them with timid or slow species. Locality names in this group matter to breeders — ask our staff which line is in the tank if you are matching an existing group.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the rainbowfish collection.
