The veiltail red devil angelfish combines the red pigmentation of the red devil line with veil finnage, an inherited trait that extends the dorsal, anal and tail fins into long trailing sheets. The result is a taller, more dramatic outline, and a fish that moves more slowly than a standard-finned angelfish. Those long fins are the reason its tankmates need choosing more carefully than usual.
Aquarium care
- Very tall as an adult once the extended finnage is counted.
- Needs a deep aquarium; height is the limiting dimension for veiltail angelfish.
- Keep flow gentle so the fins are not constantly worked against a current.
- Prefers warm, stable water with plenty of vertical cover.
- Absolutely no fin-nipping tankmates — tiger barbs and serpae tetras will ruin the fins quickly.
- Will still eat neon tetras and dwarf shrimp, despite the unhurried manner.
Best in a calm, tall planted tank with larger tetras, rasboras, corydoras and bristlenose plecos. Slow feeders like this can be beaten to food by faster fish, so watch that it is actually eating in the first week after it goes in.
