Vallisneria Natans

Vallisneria natans is a narrower-leaved vallisneria that forms an upright stand of fine green ribbons rather than the broad twisting strands of the larger species. It is a fast, undemanding background plant that fills a tank quickly, and because the leaves are slimmer it gives a lighter, less dominating effect than a wall of full-size val.

Growing it in your tank

• Root it in substrate with the crown left sitting just above the surface.
• Spreads by runners and will colonise the back of a tank on its own.
• Grows in moderate light and does particularly well in harder water.
• Root tabs help considerably in sand or inert gravel.
• Sensitive to liquid carbon dosing, which often causes vallisneria to melt back.
• Thin runners out regularly or it will crowd the plants in front of it.

A good background plant for community tanks, livebearer tanks and hard-water setups. Fish that dig, such as large cichlids and goldfish, will pull it up faster than it can root. Please dispose of surplus plant material in the household waste rather than outdoors.
