Vallisneria Gigantea

Giant vallisneria (Vallisneria gigantea) is the tape grass to reach for when a big tank needs a green back wall. It grows as a rosette of long ribbon-shaped leaves that rise from the substrate and then trail along the surface once they run out of headroom, giving that drifting jungle look behind driftwood and rockwork.

Aquarium care

• A rosette plant. Set the roots into the substrate but keep the pale crown, where leaf meets root, sitting just above it.
• Background placement in tall or long tanks, since the leaves readily exceed the height of a standard aquarium.
• Grows under moderate lighting and does not require injected CO2.
• Spreads by runners, sending daughter plants sideways through the substrate to form a stand over time.
• Responds well to root tabs in inert gravel or sand.
• Many aquarists find vallisneria reacts badly to liquid carbon products, so introduce those cautiously if you dose them.

This suits larger community aquariums and anyone who wants height and movement without a demanding routine. It works well with fish that appreciate cover and open water above it, such as rainbowfish, larger tetras and livebearers.
