Asian vallisneria (Vallisneria asiatica) is a rosette grass plant whose long, ribbon-like leaves twist as they grow, producing the corkscrew effect the plant is known for. Species boundaries within Vallisneria are debated and the trade uses several names loosely, but the growth habit is consistent: a crown at the substrate, leaves reaching for the surface, and runners spreading sideways.

Aquarium care

  • Rosette plant: bury the roots only, and keep the crown above the substrate or it rots.
  • Spreads by runners and will colonise a background if left to it.
  • Grows in moderate light without CO2, which is why it is a staple of low-tech tanks.
  • Root tabs help in inert gravel.
  • Trim whole leaves at the base rather than cutting across the tips, which browns off.
  • Reported to react badly to some algaecides and liquid carbon products, so introduce anything new cautiously.

A dependable background plant for community tanks, livebearer setups and rift-lake aquariums where a tough plant is wanted. It suits most peaceful fish, while heavy diggers will uproot young runners before they anchor.
