Candy cane tetra is a trade name for Hyphessobrycon bentosi, a member of the rosy tetra group from the lower Amazon. The body is a soft pink-translucent with a dark shoulder mark, and the fins are edged or tipped in white against a red base. Mature males develop a long, flowing dorsal fin that they raise constantly in display. Names within this group overlap heavily between suppliers, so it is worth confirming with our staff what is actually in the tank.
Aquarium care
- Reaches roughly 4 to 5 cm.
- Shoaling โ keep eight or more so the display behaviour is spread through the group.
- Prefers soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic water.
- Colours best over dark substrate in a planted tank.
- Males spar with fins raised; it is display rather than damage in a proper group.
- Takes flake, micro pellets and frozen foods.
They suit a planted community with corydoras, rasboras, pencilfish and dwarf cichlids. Kept in small numbers they can turn nippy, so a proper group is the single best thing you can do for them. Avoid much larger or faster tankmates.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the tetra collection.
