The tire track eel (Mastacembelus armatus, and often M. favus under the same trade name) is a spiny eel from rivers across South and Southeast Asia. It is not a true eel but a long-bodied fish with a pointed, flexible snout for probing the substrate. The pattern is a network of dark marbling over a tan body, which gives the fish its common name. Imported fish are sold well short of adult size.

Aquarium care

  • This fish gets big, well past a foot in length, so buy for the adult size.
  • A deep bed of soft sand. They bury themselves and will scrape their skin on gravel.
  • A tight, fully sealed lid. Tire track eels are notorious escapees and will leave through very small gaps.
  • Caves, pipes and wood for daytime cover. Activity picks up at dusk and after dark.
  • Feed meaty foods such as frozen bloodworm, earthworm, prawn and sinking carnivore pellets. Many refuse dry food at first.
  • Sensitive to poor water quality and to copper-based medications.

Keep with fish too large to swallow and calm enough not to harass them: larger barbs, gouramis and robust catfish. Small tetras, rasboras and shrimp will be eaten, and two spiny eels can be territorial.
