The super VC-10 hap (Placidochromis milomo) is a Lake Malawi cichlid best known for its thick, fleshy lips, which it presses against rock crevices to seal them off and then sucks out whatever is hiding inside. Mature males are blue with darker barring; females are plainer. The lips are not a deformity or a health problem — they are the tool the fish feeds with.
Aquarium care
- Adults reach roughly 20 cm.
- Needs a large aquarium with substantial rockwork and open swimming space.
- Requires hard, alkaline water and strong filtration.
- Moderately aggressive; keep one male with several females.
- Will eat small fish, so stock it with cichlids of similar size.
- Feeds well on quality pellets and frozen foods.
Suited to a large Malawi tank with other haps of comparable size and temperament. It is not appropriate with small peacocks, dwarf cichlids or community fish. As with most large haps, males only reach full colour once they are mature and settled.
