The super red devil angelfish is a strain of Pterophyllum scalare bred for depth of red colour, with the pigment carried through the body rather than confined to the head. Colour in red angelfish strains develops with age and is influenced by diet and by how settled the fish is, so a young fish will typically be far paler than the adult it becomes. Buying one is partly an exercise in patience.
Aquarium care
- Adults grow tall, commonly 15 cm or more from fin tip to fin tip.
- Needs a deep aquarium with vertical structure and open water to hang in.
- Prefers warm, stable water with gentle flow.
- Colour deepens as the fish matures; a varied diet including quality frozen foods helps.
- A cichlid that will eat neon tetras, small rasboras and dwarf shrimp.
- Pairs become territorial once they settle on a spawning site.
Best with larger tetras, rasboras, corydoras and bristlenose plecos in a tall planted tank. Keep them away from fin-nippers, and do not house them with very small fish. Ask our staff about current size when you visit, since angelfish are usually sold well short of adult dimensions.
