The super red bristlenose is a selectively bred line of Ancistrus, worked over many generations towards a solid orange-red body with no trace of the mottled brown of the wild fish. The eyes are dark rather than pink, which distinguishes it from the albino line. Everything else about it is a bristlenose: the flattened underside, the broad suckermouth, and the bushy snout tentacles that mature males develop and females largely do not.
Aquarium care
- Reaches roughly 12 to 15 cm.
- Peaceful with other species; males are territorial with each other.
- Largely herbivorous: algae wafers and blanched vegetables.
- Needs driftwood to rasp on as part of its diet.
- Wants a cave to shelter in during the day.
- Bottom-dweller that grazes glass and hardscape.
Colour intensity varies between individuals and with diet, and it tends to deepen as the fish matures. A varied vegetable-based diet helps. It suits the same peaceful community tanks as an ordinary bristlenose, and it is a good deal easier to see against dark substrate.
