The strawberry peacock is a line-bred Aulonocara selected for an even pink to red-orange body, usually without the heavy blue banding of the wild peacocks. It is a trade name rather than a species, and different suppliers produce slightly different fish under it, so the exact shade varies between shipments. Males show the colour and females stay plain silver-brown, which is true of every peacock line.
Aquarium care
- A medium-sized rift lake cichlid needing floor space rather than height.
- Requires hard, alkaline water.
- Territorial, particularly towards other similarly coloured peacocks.
- Keep one male with several females, or in an all-male group in a large tank.
- Wants rock piles with caves over a sand base.
- Quality cichlid pellets plus frozen foods.
Suits a dedicated Malawi tank with other peacocks, haps and rift lake catfish. Soft-water tetras and similar community fish are the wrong company.
