Spiky moss is an aquarium moss traded as Taxiphyllum sp., named for the upright, pointed shoots that give it a bristled look next to the flatter, more trailing common mosses. Trade names for aquarium mosses are unreliable. Several near-identical forms circulate under the same labels, and the exact plant sold as spiky moss varies between suppliers and even between batches.

Aquarium care

  • Mosses attach to hardscape rather than being planted. Tie it to driftwood or stone with thread or fishing line, or use a cyanoacrylate gel, and let it anchor itself.
  • Grows in low to moderate light, and bright light mostly speeds up algae on the fine shoots.
  • Propagate by pulling the mat apart and re-tying the pieces.
  • Trim with scissors to keep the pad tight, or it goes shaggy and traps detritus.
  • A little flow through the moss stops debris settling into it.
  • No CO2 needed, although it thickens faster with it.

A useful structural plant for shrimp tanks, fry grow-out and nano layouts, and for softening bare driftwood. It suits small, peaceful fish rather than big diggers.

Stock rotates, and plants are sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the moss collection.
