The sparkling gourami (Trichopsis pumila) is one of the smallest labyrinth fish kept in the hobby, from shallow, heavily vegetated water in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. The body is a brownish olive scattered with iridescent blue-green flecks that catch the light, and the fins are edged in blue with fine red spotting. The eyes are a startling electric blue. It is a fish that rewards a close look rather than one that announces itself across a room.

Aquarium care

  • Reaches only about 3 cm.
  • Peaceful, but timid and easily bullied.
  • Keep a small group of six or so; males display to one another without real harm.
  • Wants dense planting, floating cover, dim light and still water.
  • Makes an audible clicking or croaking sound when displaying.
  • Needs small foods: micro pellets, crushed flake, frozen daphnia and baby brine shrimp.

A species for a quiet nano or planted tank, alongside pygmy corydoras, chili rasboras or celestial pearl danios. Anything fast, large or greedy will simply keep it hidden.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current gourami list.
