The snakeskin barb (Barbodes rhomboocellatus, also sold as Desmopuntius rhomboocellatus) comes from blackwater streams and peat swamps in Borneo. The common name describes the pattern: a row of dark, rounded vertical bars over a coppery-orange body, overlapping into something close to reptile scaling when the fish is settled. Colour deepens noticeably in tannin-stained water over a dark substrate.

Aquarium care

  • Keep a group of six or more. On their own they stay shy and pale.
  • Soft, acidic water shows them at their best, though they adapt to moderately hard tap water.
  • Subdued lighting, driftwood, leaf litter and planting to break up sightlines.
  • Feed small pellets, flake and frozen foods; they graze more or less constantly.
  • Less boisterous than tiger barbs, but still a busy mid-water fish.

A natural fit for a blackwater or Southeast Asian community with rasboras, kuhli loaches, gouramis and small catfish. Slow, long-finned tankmates are best avoided, as with most barbs.

Stock rotates, and local pickup is available at our Lethbridge store. More in barbs.
