The snake skin discus (Symphysodon sp.) is defined by patterning rather than colour: very fine, dense lines cover the entire fish, carrying across the head and into the fins instead of stopping at the gill plate. Snakeskin lines also tend to show more vertical bars than a standard discus, which is part of how they are identified. The base colour varies between suppliers, from pale gold to strong turquoise. Discus are cichlids of the warm Amazon backwaters.
Aquarium care
- Tall aquarium; the shape of the fish suits height, not length.
- Warm water at the upper end of the tropical range, kept steady.
- Frequent partial water changes and restrained stocking.
- Keep five or more; discus are social and settle badly on their own.
- Discus granules, frozen bloodworm and beefheart preparations, fed slowly.
- Fine patterning reads best under soft lighting rather than bright white light.
Well suited to a keeper who values pattern over bright colour. Cardinal tetras, rummy nose tetras and sterbai corydoras all cope with the temperature; fast or aggressive fish should be kept out of a discus tank.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the discus collection for what is in.
