This is the barred or striped silver dollar (Metynnis fasciatus), here as the Rio Capim line from Brazil. Over a bright silver, disc-shaped body it carries a series of dark vertical bars, which makes it a far more strongly marked fish than the plain silver dollar most people picture. The bars fade and intensify with mood and lighting, so the same fish can look boldly striped one hour and almost plain the next.
Aquarium care
- Reaches around 15 cm, smaller than the redhook silver dollar.
- Shoaling — keep five or more; a lone fish is a nervous fish.
- Herbivorous. It will eat live plants, so vegetable matter must be the core of the diet.
- Offer blanched vegetables, algae wafers and vegetable-based pellets.
- Prefers warm, soft, slightly acidic water.
- Nervous by nature — provide cover and keep the tank away from busy walkways.
They suit a spacious community with other calm, larger South American fish. Locality names such as Rio Capim describe where a line originally came from and are not always applied consistently in the trade, so confirm with our staff what is in the tank if the provenance matters to you.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the freshwater fish collection.
