The Siamese algae eater (Crossocheilus oblongus) is a slim Southeast Asian cyprinid, silver-gold with a single ragged black stripe running from the snout through the tail fin. It is bought for a job: it is one of very few aquarium fish that will genuinely eat black beard algae, and it also works on other soft algae and biofilm. Look at the stripe when choosing one, as several similar fish are sold under the same name and do not do the same work.

Aquarium care

  • Grows larger than most people expect, so it needs a reasonable tank.
  • Peaceful when young; adults can become pushy with each other.
  • Keep a group of five or more, or a single fish, rather than two or three.
  • Active swimmer that uses the whole tank, not just the bottom.
  • Wants planting and wood, and appreciates some flow.
  • Omnivorous: it will take flake and pellets happily, so keep feeding modest if you want it grazing.

Suits a planted community with barbs, danios, rainbowfish and larger tetras. Its interest in algae drops as it grows and gets fed, which is worth knowing before you buy one to solve a problem.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current algae eater list.
