The rainbow shark (Epalzeorhynchos frenatus) is a Southeast Asian cyprinid with a dark grey-black body and vivid red-orange fins, including a tall dorsal it holds erect when it is confident. It works the bottom of the tank, grazing algae and biofilm from wood and rock, and it claims a territory around whatever cave or overhang it decides is home. The shark name comes from the profile and nothing else.
Aquarium care
- Reaches around 15 cm and needs a tank with floor space.
- Territorial. Keep only one per tank; two will fight until one gives up.
- Also intolerant of red-tailed black sharks and similar bottom-dwellers.
- Wants caves, pipes and wood to claim, which reduces the trouble considerably.
- Bottom-oriented but will chase through open water when defending.
- Omnivorous: sinking pellets, algae wafers, flake and frozen foods.
Best as a single specimen in a medium to large community with fast mid-water fish such as barbs, danios and rainbowfish, which stay out of its way. Avoid slow bottom-dwellers and other sharks.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current shark list.
