Discus Buffer is a dry buffer used to move an aquarium toward the soft, acidic water that discus and other blackwater fish come from, and to hold it there.
Key features
- Lowers pH and resists it drifting back up, which is the harder half of the job in hard tap water.
- Softens water by precipitating calcium and magnesium, so it acts on hardness as well as on pH.
- Intended for discus, and equally relevant to other soft-water species such as many South American tetras and dwarf cichlids.
Using it safely
- Move slowly. A sudden pH swing is more dangerous to fish than a steady reading that is not quite ideal, so adjust across days rather than in one dose.
- Where you can, buffer new water in a bucket before it enters the tank instead of dosing the display directly.
- Test before and after every adjustment. Working blind with a buffer is how tanks crash.
- Target range and dose rate are printed on the container. Follow those, and ask us if you are unsure what your water is doing.
Shelved with our discus supplies at the Lethbridge store.
