Seachem Cichlid Lake Salt™

Cichlid Lake Salt is a blend of mineral salts made to recreate the hard, mineral-rich water of the African Rift Lakes.

This is not the same product as ordinary aquarium salt. Sodium chloride does nothing for Rift Lake water chemistry. Cichlid Lake Salt supplies the calcium, magnesium, potassium and other minerals that give those lakes their character, so the two are not interchangeable.

Key features

• Provides a mineral profile modelled on the water Rift Lake cichlids evolved in, rather than simply adding sodium.
• Seachem formulates it to affect general hardness rather than alkalinity or pH, so it can be used alongside a separate buffer.
• Dosage differs by lake. Tanganyika, Malawi and Victoria are not the same water, and the label sets each of them out.

Using it

• Added when setting up a tank and with water changes, matched to the volume of new water rather than to the whole aquarium.
• The label's doses assume RO or deionised water. If you use tap water, measure general hardness first and add according to what is genuinely missing.
• Follow the label for the lake you are keeping. We do not restate dose figures here.
