Sagittaria (Sagittaria natans) is a grass-like rosette plant with strap-shaped leaves, and it reads as a shorter, sturdier alternative to vallisneria. The blades are broader and stiffer than tape grass, and a settled patch fills in as a low green sward rather than a tall curtain.
Aquarium care
- Rosette plant. Plant the roots into the substrate and keep the crown level with its surface.
- Foreground to midground. It covers ground by spreading outward, so it does not need to be planted densely.
- Propagates by runners, throwing daughter plants out sideways from the parent rosette.
- Moderate lighting gives the fastest spread. Under lower light it grows more slowly and stays shorter.
- Root feeding matters more than water column dosing here, so root tabs are worthwhile in plain sand or gravel.
- CO2 is not required, though growth is quicker with it.
Good for aquarists who want a grassy foreground without committing to the carpeting plants that demand high light and CO2. Corydoras and small schooling fish do well over it, since the low growth leaves plenty of open swimming space above.
Plant stock rotates with each shipment and can be collected by local pickup at our Lethbridge store. More in the sagittaria collection.
