The ruby tetra (Axelrodia riesei) is one of the smallest tetras in the hobby, found in the Rio Meta drainage in Colombia. A good specimen is a deep, even ruby red with a small dark spot at the base of the tail and very little other marking. The colour is highly dependent on the tank: in a dark, softly lit blackwater setup it is remarkable, and over pale sand under bright light it washes out almost entirely.
Aquarium care
- Very small — adults reach about 2 cm.
- Keep ten or more; this is not a fish to buy in threes.
- Soft, acidic, tannin-stained water suits it best.
- Dark substrate, floating plants and subdued lighting make the difference to colour.
- Needs very small foods — micro pellets, crushed flake, baby brine shrimp.
- A mature, stable aquarium; it is not suited to a newly cycled tank.
They belong in a planted nano or blackwater community with dwarf shrimp, pygmy corydoras, chili rasboras and other tiny quiet fish. Anything larger will either eat them or simply take all the food before they reach it.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the tetra collection.
