Royal tetra, or blue emperor (Inpaichthys kerri), is a small Brazilian characin from the Rio Aripuana system. A dark stripe runs from the gill cover through to the tail, and above it sits a violet-blue sheen that shifts with the angle of the light. Males carry stronger colour with a reddish cast, while females are rounder and more silvery. The green tint on the fins in our photo comes from plants behind the fish.
Aquarium care
- Keep a group of at least six to eight so the fish settle and colour up properly.
- Soft, slightly acidic water and gentle flow suit them best.
- Planting, driftwood, subdued lighting and a dark substrate deepen the blue.
- Feed small flake, micro pellets and frozen foods such as daphnia and cyclops.
- Peaceful, and easily intimidated by pushy tankmates.
An excellent choice for a quiet planted community alongside rasboras, pencilfish, corydoras, otocinclus and adult dwarf shrimp, though shrimplets will be eaten. Avoid boisterous barbs, and anything large enough to treat them as food.
Stock rotates, and local pickup is available at our Lethbridge store. See more tetras.
