The comet is the single-tailed goldfish (Carassius auratus): a long, streamlined body and a deeply forked tail that make it a genuinely fast, powerful swimmer. This is the red and white form, patterned in bold blocks of orange-red over white, and the balance of the two colours differs from fish to fish. It behaves nothing like a fancy goldfish — where a fantail drifts, a comet covers ground.
Aquarium care
- Coldwater; no heater is needed in a normally heated room.
- Grows large, commonly 25 to 30 cm, and lives for many years.
- Needs swimming length above all else — a tall, short tank is the wrong shape.
- A heavy waste producer requiring oversized filtration and generous water changes.
- Omnivorous; feed sinking pellets alongside blanched vegetables.
- Will eat soft aquarium plants and uproot others.
Keep comets with other single-tailed goldfish of similar size. Do not mix them with fancy varieties, because the fast fish will take the food long before a fantail or moor reaches it. Goldfish are an established invasive species in Canadian waters — never release one into a pond, canal, storm pond or any waterway.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the goldfish collection.
