The red valentine discus (Symphysodon sp.) is a solid red-orange fish from the pigeon blood side of discus breeding, where pattern has been bred out in favour of an even, warm body colour. Pigeon-derived lines are known for developing black peppering across the flanks, which comes and goes with stress, lighting and background, so a settled fish in a darker tank generally looks cleaner. Discus are Amazonian cichlids from warm, quiet water.

Aquarium care

  • Tall aquarium with real depth front to back.
  • Warm water near the top of the tropical range, without sudden changes.
  • Regular partial water changes and a lightly stocked tank.
  • Group of five or more, or a settled pair.
  • Discus granules, frozen bloodworm and beefheart preparations, fed unhurried.
  • A calm tank with a darker background helps keep peppering to a minimum.

Suits a keeper who wants block colour and understands that appearance will shift with the fish's mood. Keep with calm, warm-tolerant fish such as cardinal tetras and sterbai corydoras, and avoid anything quick or pushy at feeding time.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Current arrivals are in the discus collection.
