The red turquoise discus (Symphysodon sp.) is one of the long-established patterned lines, showing turquoise streaking over a red-brown ground with more red showing through than in a blue turquoise fish. The balance between red and turquoise shifts with the individual, its condition and its mood, so the same fish can look noticeably different from one week to the next. Discus come from the warm, slow blackwater of the Amazon basin.
Aquarium care
- Tall tank; height and front-to-back depth are both worth having.
- Warm water at the upper end of the tropical range, held steady.
- Frequent partial water changes, light stocking, no accumulated waste.
- Keep a group of five or more, or an established pair.
- Discus granules, frozen bloodworm and beefheart preparations.
- Colour intensity varies with condition; a settled, well-fed fish looks quite different from a stressed one.
A sound choice for a keeper wanting a classic discus look with warmth in the base colour. Pair with calm warm-water fish such as cardinal tetras, rummy nose tetras or sterbai corydoras, and keep boisterous barbs and large cichlids out of the tank.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the discus collection for availability.
