The red spider discus (Symphysodon sp.) takes its name from the fine, web-like tracery of red that spreads over a paler ground, the lines thinner and more broken than the bold striping of a turquoise fish. How far that webbing extends differs from fish to fish, and it usually becomes clearer as the fish fills out. Discus are disc-shaped South American cichlids from warm, still, tea-coloured water.
Aquarium care
- Tall aquarium; discus need vertical room more than length.
- Warm water at the upper end of the tropical range, kept stable.
- Regular partial water changes; they do poorly in tanks left to drift.
- Keep five or more so no individual is bullied.
- Discus granules, frozen bloodworm and beefheart preparations, fed patiently.
- Not a fish for a newly cycled tank; let the system mature first.
Good for a keeper who wants detail worth looking at closely and is prepared to maintain the tank to suit. Cardinal tetras, rummy nose tetras and sterbai corydoras all handle the warmth; large plecos and other fish that rasp at surfaces are a poor choice alongside slow, flat-sided fish.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the discus collection for current stock.
