The red phantom tetra (Hyphessobrycon sweglesi) comes from the Rio Meta in the upper Orinoco system of Colombia. The body is translucent red with a distinct dark shoulder spot just behind the gill cover. Males carry a taller, more pointed dorsal fin; females are slightly rounder and show a white marking in the fins. It is a fish that rewards the right setup — the same fish in soft, shaded water is a noticeably different colour from one in a bright, hard-water tank.

Aquarium care

  • Small, around 4 cm.
  • Shoaling — keep eight or more.
  • Prefers soft, slightly acidic, tannin-stained water.
  • Dark substrate and subdued light bring out the red; leaf litter helps.
  • Peaceful, though males display to one another constantly within a group.
  • Feed small flake, micro pellets and frozen foods.

They suit a planted blackwater-style community with corydoras, small rasboras, pencilfish and dwarf cichlids. Avoid boisterous or much larger tankmates, which will keep them subdued and pale, and avoid pairing them with hard-water species whose needs pull the tank in the opposite direction.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the tetra collection.
