The red neon blue eye (Pseudomugil luminatus) is a small New Guinea rainbowfish described only in 2016, and it is about as intensely coloured as a nano fish gets. Males are a solid orange-red across the body with black-edged fins, blue-white fin tips and a luminous blue eye ring. Females are a plain amber-silver and easily mistaken for a different fish. Males display against one another almost continuously, fins fully spread.
Aquarium care
- Reaches around 3 cm.
- Peaceful; the male sparring is display rather than fighting.
- Keep eight or more with several males to get the displaying.
- Wants a mature, densely planted tank with gentle flow.
- Swims in the middle and upper levels.
- Needs small foods: micro pellets, crushed flake, frozen cyclops and baby brine shrimp.
- Naturally short-lived.
A striking centrepiece for a planted nano tank with chili rasboras, pygmy corydoras and celestial pearl danios. Larger or faster fish will keep it hidden.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current rainbows.
