Orange Melon Discus

The orange melon discus is a solid-colour line of the South American discus (Symphysodon sp.), bred away from the striping of the turquoise fish towards an even orange-apricot wash over the whole body, deepest around the shoulders and fading paler towards the fins. Colour intensity varies with condition and diet, and a well-kept fish holds it far better than a stressed one. The shape is the usual discus disc, tall and laterally flattened.

Aquarium care

• Needs a tall, deep tank rather than a long shallow one.
• Wants warm, very stable water at the top of the tropical range.
• Excellent water quality and a regular water change routine are not optional.
• Social. Keep a group of five or more, or an established pair.
• A slow, deliberate feeder: quality discus pellets, frozen bloodworm and beefheart foods.
• Best added to a tank that is already mature and settled.

Suits a species tank or a warm community with sterbai corydoras, cardinal tetras and rummy nose tetras. Avoid fast, greedy fish and anything that nips.
