The red fin borleyi (Copadichromis borleyi) is a Lake Malawi cichlid that lives in open water rather than among the rocks, feeding on plankton it picks out of the water column. Males carry a deep blue head and body with orange-red running through the fins; females are silver. Because it is an open-water fish rather than a rock dweller, swimming room matters more here than caves do.
Aquarium care
- Adults reach roughly 15 to 18 cm.
- Needs a long aquarium with genuine open swimming space.
- Requires hard, alkaline water with good filtration and oxygenation.
- One of the calmer Malawi haps, though males still hold territory when breeding.
- Keep one male with a group of females.
- Feeds in mid-water; quality pellets and frozen foods both work.
A good fit for a Malawi community with peacocks and other peaceful haps. Avoid housing it with aggressive mbuna, which will harass it and take the food first, and avoid small community fish entirely. Colour develops with maturity, so young males look plain at first.
