The red devil angelfish is a red-pigmented strain of Pterophyllum scalare. Like other red angelfish lines it arrives looking modest and colours up over months as it matures, with the intensity varying between individuals from the same batch. The underlying fish is the familiar Amazonian angelfish: tall, slow-moving, watchful, and quick to develop a strong opinion about which part of the tank belongs to it.
Aquarium care
- Adults reach roughly 15 cm in height including the fins.
- Requires a deep tank rather than a long shallow one.
- Warm, stable water with gentle flow suits it best.
- Will eat neon tetras, small rasboras and dwarf shrimp.
- Grow several young together if you want a pair to form naturally.
- Accepts flake, pellets and frozen foods; frozen foods support colour development.
They suit a tall, planted community with larger tetras, rasboras, corydoras and bristlenose plecos. Avoid tiger barbs and other fin-nippers, and avoid stocking them alongside very small fish. A spawning pair will clear a corner of the tank and defend it firmly.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the angelfish collection.
