The red-headed diamond angelfish is a strain of Pterophyllum scalare combining a red-orange head with the diamond pattern โ a fine, irregular speckling of dark pigment scattered across a pale body. No two fish carry exactly the same arrangement, and the pattern continues to shift as the fish grows, so what you choose as a juvenile will keep changing for the first year.
Aquarium care
- Adults grow tall, commonly 15 cm or more with the fins.
- Needs a deep tank with vertical structure and open swimming water.
- Warm, stable water and gentle flow suit it best.
- A cichlid; it will eat neon tetras, small rasboras and dwarf shrimp.
- Colour and pattern develop over months, so juveniles look plain by comparison.
- Feeds readily on flake, pellets and frozen foods.
They suit a tall planted community with larger tetras, rasboras, corydoras and bristlenose plecos. Avoid fin-nippers and very small tankmates. If you want a breeding pair, buy a group of young fish and allow a pair to form rather than choosing two adults.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the angelfish collection.
