Rabbit snails (Tylomelania spp.) come from the ancient lakes of Sulawesi in Indonesia and look quite unlike the usual aquarium snails. The shell is a long, dark, tapering spire, sometimes ridged, and the body that emerges is heavy, wrinkled and slow, with a downturned face that genuinely does suggest a rabbit. Assorted means a mix of whatever shell and body colours have arrived, which commonly includes yellow, orange, black and chocolate forms.

Aquarium care

  • Large for an aquarium snail, and slow-moving.
  • Peaceful and no threat to fish.
  • Prefers hard, alkaline water; soft or acidic water erodes the shell.
  • Grazes biofilm and algae, and needs supplementing with algae wafers, blanched vegetables and calcium.
  • Breeds very slowly, producing a single large young at a time rather than clutches. It will not overrun a tank.
  • Will graze soft plants, so pair it with hardy species.

Suits a hard-water planted tank or a Sulawesi setup with peaceful fish. Keep it away from loaches and puffers, which eat snails.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current snail list.
