The purple Matano crab (Syntripsa matannensis) is a freshwater crab endemic to Lake Matano on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Colour runs from deep violet through plum to near-black, and varies noticeably between individuals. Most of the day is spent tucked into rockwork or under wood, with activity picking up around dusk.
Aquarium care
- Warm, hard, alkaline water suits Sulawesi lake species; keep it clean and stable.
- Plenty of caves, rock piles and wood so each crab can claim a hiding place of its own.
- A secure lid is essential. Crabs climb hoses, cords and silicone corners.
- Feed sinking pellets, algae wafers and occasional frozen or protein foods.
- They will catch and eat small fish, shrimp and snails, so this is not a shrimp-safe or nano-community animal.
- A moulting crab is vulnerable and should be left undisturbed until the new shell hardens.
Requirements vary across the Sulawesi crabs, including whether land access is wanted, so please ask our staff about the current group before you build a setup for them. Best kept in a species tank, or with fish too large to be caught and quick enough to stay clear.
Stock rotates, and local pickup is available at our Lethbridge store. See our crayfish and lobsters.
