The powder brown tang (Acanthurus japonicus) is a Western Pacific surgeonfish with a warm brown body, a white blaze across the cheek and yellow running along the dorsal fin. It is a constant, deliberate swimmer that spends its day grazing surfaces, and it needs considerably more space than its adult length alone would suggest.

Aquarium care

  • Adults reach around 20 cm.
  • Needs a long, mature aquarium with plenty of open swimming room and strong water movement.
  • Chiefly a herbivore; offer dried marine algae or nori daily alongside prepared foods.
  • Susceptible to marine ich, particularly in the first weeks after a move. Quarantine is worth the trouble.
  • Territorial toward other tangs, especially surgeonfish of similar shape and size.
  • It does not eat corals.

Best suited to an experienced keeper with a large, stable system and only one tang in the display. It mixes well enough with clownfish, wrasses, cardinalfish and other settled reef stock. It is not a fish for a new or small aquarium.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the saltwater fish collection.
