The platinum angelfish is a solid white strain of Pterophyllum scalare, with no barring or patterning and a faint pearlescent sheen that catches the light as the fish turns. Against dark wood or a planted background it is one of the more striking angelfish varieties, and because there is no pattern to distract the eye, the shape of the fish and the length of its trailing ventral filaments do the work.
Aquarium care
- Adults grow tall, commonly 15 cm or more including the fins.
- Requires a deep tank; a standard shallow aquarium is not suitable for adults.
- Wants warm, stable water with gentle to moderate flow.
- Will eat neon tetras, small rasboras and dwarf shrimp — stock accordingly.
- Pairs form from a group and then hold a territory, often a broad leaf or a piece of slate.
- Feeds well on flake, pellets and frozen foods.
Suits a community of larger tetras, rasboras, corydoras and bristlenose plecos in a tall, planted tank. Avoid fin-nippers, which will target the long ventral filaments. If you want a pair, buy several young fish and let them sort themselves out rather than picking two at random.
