The pictus catfish (Pimelodus pictus) comes from the Amazon and Orinoco basins and is one of the most active catfish in the hobby. The body is a bright polished silver scattered with clean black spots, and the barbels are extraordinarily long, trailing back past the tail on a young fish. Rather than hiding under wood it patrols constantly, in fast sweeping circuits of the tank, usually with several others.
Aquarium care
- Grows to a solid mid-sized catfish and needs a long tank with open swimming room.
- Social. Keep three or more; single fish are restless and skittish.
- Peaceful towards fish it cannot swallow, but it will eat neons, guppies and shrimp.
- Wants a soft substrate and smooth decor, since it moves at speed.
- Its pectoral spines catch in nets, so move it in a container.
- Omnivorous: sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm and chopped prawn.
A good match for medium to large community fish such as severums, silver dollars, larger barbs and rainbowfish. Do not pair it with nano fish.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current catfish list.
