We do not take backorders on live fish, invertebrates or plants. Livestock arrives on the shipping schedule our suppliers and the weather allow, so we will not promise a date we cannot keep.

What is in the tanks changes from week to week. Ask us and we will tell you what is in and what is coming, or check back shortly. Visit us or get in touch.

The pearly calvus (Altolamprologus calvus) is a Lake Tanganyika cichlid built like a blade — extremely compressed side to side, with heavy scaling and a sloping head that lets it push into narrow rock cracks after prey. It hangs almost motionless in the water, then moves suddenly. Growth is famously slow, so a small fish stays small for a long time, and patience is part of keeping one.

Aquarium care

  • Adults can reach 12 to 13 cm, but take years to get there.
  • Needs hard, alkaline water and stacked rockwork with narrow crevices.
  • A predator of small fish, fry and shrimp — anything that fits in the mouth is food.
  • Calm and unaggressive toward fish too large to eat.
  • Takes quality pellets and frozen foods; feed with restraint given the slow growth.
  • Spawns in shells and tight crevices.

Good in a Tanganyikan community with other rock dwellers of similar or larger size. Do not keep it with small fish, dwarf shrimp or anything else it can swallow. It is a poor match for a soft-water community tank.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the Tanganyikan collection.
