The pearl gourami (Trichopodus leerii) is generally reckoned the handsomest of the larger gouramis. It comes from peat swamps and slow rivers in Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo, and the whole body is covered in a fine mother-of-pearl spotting over a soft lilac-brown ground, cut by a ragged dark line from the snout to the tail. Mature males develop a deep orange-red throat and breast and extended, filamentous fins.
Aquarium care
- Reaches about 12 cm.
- Calm and slow-moving for its size, and easily outcompeted at feeding time.
- A single male with two or three females works better than two males together.
- Wants a long tank with planting, driftwood and floating cover, plus quiet water.
- Breathes air at the surface, so leave an air gap under the lid.
- Omnivorous: flake, pellets, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp.
A fine centrepiece for a planted community with harlequin rasboras, larger tetras, corydoras and loaches. Avoid fin-nipping barbs, which will target the trailing fins.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current gourami list.
