The peacock gudgeon (Tateurndina ocellicauda) is a small sleeper goby from freshwater streams and ponds in eastern Papua New Guinea. The body is a silver-blue flushed with rose and yellow along the belly, banded in red, with black-and-yellow edged fins and a dark eyespot at the base of the tail. Mature males develop a raised, rounded forehead. Unlike many gobies it swims freely in mid-water rather than perching on the bottom.

Aquarium care

  • Reaches around 6 cm.
  • Peaceful, though males posture at one another over territory.
  • Keep a small group with more females than males.
  • A cave spawner. Give it small caves, pipes or a coconut shell.
  • Wants a planted tank with gentle flow and shaded areas.
  • Prefers frozen and live foods, though many will take quality micro pellets.

A good centrepiece for a quiet planted community with small rasboras, corydoras and gentle tetras. It will take very small fry and baby shrimp, so it is not a match for a shrimp breeding tank.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See more in assorted and interesting.
