Paskai Rainbowfish

The Paskai blue eye is one of the small Pseudomugil rainbowfish from New Guinea, a group quite separate from the larger Melanotaenia. It is a nano fish with a translucent yellow-orange body, black-flecked scale edges and, as the name says, a brilliant blue ring around the eye. Males have larger, more elaborate fins and spend much of the day flaring them at one another, which is most of the reason to keep a group.

Aquarium care

• Reaches around 3 cm.
• Peaceful, though males display constantly among themselves.
• Keep eight or more, with several males so the displaying happens.
• Wants a mature, well-planted tank with gentle flow.
• Occupies the middle and upper levels.
• Needs small foods: micro pellets, crushed flake, frozen cyclops and baby brine shrimp.
• Short-lived compared with larger rainbowfish.

Suits a planted nano tank with chili rasboras, pygmy corydoras and celestial pearl danios. Keep it away from anything fast or large enough to bully it.
