The ocellaris clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) is the orange-and-white anemonefish most people picture when they think of a marine aquarium. It comes from shallow Indo-Pacific reefs, and the fish we stock are usually captive bred, which makes them hardier, better adjusted to prepared food and easier on wild populations. They are bold for their size, stay close to a chosen spot in the tank, and often adopt a coral, a powerhead or a quiet corner instead of an anemone.
Aquarium care
- Adults reach about 8 cm.
- A 75 L tank is a reasonable minimum for a single fish or a pair.
- Keep one fish or one bonded pair; adding more clownfish later usually ends in fighting.
- An anemone is not required, and is not the easy part of the hobby it looks like.
- Eats prepared marine pellets, flake and frozen foods readily.
- Stays in the mid and lower water column near its chosen shelter.
- One of the more forgiving marine fish for someone starting out.
Good tankmates include gobies, cardinalfish, small wrasses and other calm reef fish. A settled clownfish will defend its patch, so avoid other clownfish species and very timid bottom dwellers that cannot move out of the way.
