The orange volcano snail is one of the Tylomelania rabbit snails from the lakes of Sulawesi, selected for a bright orange body against a dark, near-black tapering shell. The contrast is the whole appeal: the shell is plain and the animal inside is not. Like all rabbit snails it moves slowly and deliberately, grazing across wood, rock and glass, and it is large enough to be a feature of the tank rather than a background cleaner.
Aquarium care
- Large and slow-moving.
- Entirely peaceful.
- Needs hard, alkaline water. Acidic water pits and erodes the shell.
- Grazes biofilm and algae; supplement with algae wafers, blanched vegetables and a calcium source.
- Reproduces very slowly, one large young at a time, so it will not take over a tank.
- Will nibble soft plants.
Good in a hard-water planted tank or a dedicated Sulawesi setup with calm fish. Loaches and puffers will attack it, so keep those out of the equation.
